After the Unity disaster in the recent Ubuntu 10.10, I was forced to install XFCE and throw Gnome from my netbook. Sure, Gnome is a great start for a linux newbie, but after a while it doesn't help when you want to turn into a command line superhero. Plus, the Unity was a a reason to stop using the ubuntu-desktop and ue the Xubuntu-desktop instead. The only thing I missed was the auto-mounting feature that Nautilus had (with gnome-mount). I don't want to play dirty with auto-mounts at boot, so enter Gigolo - a utility that helps you mount and unmount partitions easily. The best part, it comes with XFCE itself.
I had to reset the panels once after i dirtied it. Here's how I did it...
After that's done, Alt+F2 and you'll be asked for a cmd to run. Enter "xfce4-panel" and it's back to the way you saw it the first time :)
Now we'll need to enable the suspend option as a part of the action buttons. In Gnome, suspend was in the power menu, but it's not displayed in XFCE by default. To enable it, type xfce4-settings-editor in the terminal and select "xfce4-session" in the side pane. Select the group "shutdown", enable the option "ShowSuspend". By default the option is disabled. In order to enable it, you'll have to click click the pencil icon on top and enable it. Then set it to TRUE. Done! You now have a working desktop with gnome-like options, but faster :D
